REGISTERED VETERINARY TECHNOLOGIST

To qualify for this category of membership, an individual must:

  • Graduate from an accredited Veterinary Technology program;
  • Achieve a passing grade on the Veterinary Technician National Examination.
 
Once an individual has been accepted as a member of the BCVTA, they must attend a minimum of 15 hours of continuing education each year to maintain their RVT status.
 

RVT members in good standing have the following rights of membership:

  • to receive notice of, and to attend, all General Meetings;
  • to make or second motions at a General Meeting and to speak in debate on
    motions under consideration;
  • to exercise a vote on matters for determination at General Meetings;
  • to serve on committees of the Society, as invited;
  • subject to these Bylaws, to nominate eligible Persons for election as an
    elected Director;
  • use the professional title “Registered Veterinary Technologist”

NON RESIDENT RVT

To qualify for this category of membership, an individual must:

  • Graduate from an accredited Veterinary Technology program;
  • Achieve a passing grade on the Veterinary Technician National Examination;
  • Ordinarily reside in a Canadian Province or Territory not having a governing regulatory body.  

 

Non-Resident members in good standing have the following rights of membership:

  • to be non-voting members and ineligible to hold office;
  • to Pay membership dues;
  • to adhere to the constitution, bylaws, and code of ethics  of the Association

VETERINARY TECHNOLOGY STUDENT 

A student member is a person who is enrolled in an accredited veterinary technology program. Student members shall:

  • Reside in the Province of British Columbia, or other Canadian Province or Territory that does not have a recognized AHT/VT Association (eg, Yukon, North West Territories, Nunavut);
  • Be non-voting members and ineligible to hold office;
  • Pay membership dues;
  • Not be considered a registered member of the Association;
  • Adhere to the constitution, bylaws, and code of ethics of the Association.

NON-PRACTICING RVT

Non-Practicing membership was created to support members:

  • On parental leave, long term illness or family emergency,
  • Who wish to remain BCVTA members
  • Who are not actively working as RVT.

 

Non-practicing members shall:

  • Not work as Registered Veterinary Technologists under this category;
  • Remain in this status for up to five years before they are required to reinstate their membership.
  • Not be required to submit CE credits while  registered under this category.

 

There is no requirement to rewrite the VTNE on return. To be reinstated, the member must submit the annual required amount of continuing education activities per year of non-practicing status, up to a maximum of 75 credits.

Members who have been in the non-practicing category of membership for more than 5 years may be required to attend additional courses of the Board’s choosing prior to reinstatement.

RETIRED RVT

A retired member is a former RVT member who is fully retired from professional practice. Retired RVT members shall:

  • Be an Active Member in good standing at the time of category change;
  • Have a minimum of 20 years of registered membership in a provincial AHT/VT Association;
  • No longer be working in the animal health/veterinary field in any capacity;
  • Have access to BCVTA communications;
  • Be exempt from continuing education accumulation requirements;
  • Be considered a retired registered member of the Association and given the title Registered Veterinary Technologist (Retired) (RVT(ret)).
